Program: Using Computers To Create Art
This month’s program on November 5 will be presented by Dick Helmick, Kerry McFall and Terry Tallis. According to Terry, members will need to come and decide for yourselves if the work that will be shown is art. The challenge, he contends, “Is this stuff art or isn’t it?†The controversy of using computers to design and to create art are perhaps the same kind of discussions that surrounded the Dutch masters such as Vermeer or those around da Vinci’s work in the 15th century because of their purported use of ‘camera obscura’ to aid them in their art and every innovation since then, Terry claims.
The question for artists today is the role computers play in the creation of artwork now or in the future. Terry says, “Is our art today a ‘static’ notion or is it continually evolving?†As an artist, the decision is up to you.
Speaking of…Technology and Art
Throughout the centuries the art world has continued to evolve. And we are proud to say that the Corvallis Art Guild continues to evolve with it. We look forward to our upcoming program that will discuss “The Use of Computers in Artâ€.
Carolyn and I would like to let you know that “digital art†has been one of the topics in the forefront of some of our discussions. We are planning a sit-down Forum at the beginning of next year where you, as members of the Art Guild, can come and have a real discussion about where the art world is going in this relatively new form of art.
Along with that, we would like to set up a discussion board on our website to discuss this exciting (and sometimes controversial) art form. Join us as we learn how three local artists are integrating their computer skills into their art at our November 5 meeting.

WSO First Place Award
Marjorie Kinch, CAG & Watercolor Society of Oregon member, won the First Place Award at the WSO’s 42nd Annual Aqueous Media Exhibition held in October at the Meadow Lakes Golf Club in Prineville, Oregon.
Her painting was one of over 300 entries from Oregon artists. The show’s juror was Dan Burt, who is a nationally recognized artist and signature member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society.
The winning entry, titled “Steam Dreams #2″ was painted in multi-layered washes using two split compliments of transparent watercolor to depict the beauty and intricate workings of an ancient steam tractor. The artwork, along with other winning paintings, are on display in Prineville through October, then to Roseburg and show at other galleries throughout Oregon until April 2008.
New Exhibiting Members
At the jury meeting held in the basement of the Corvallis Public Library on Tuesday, October 2, the following associate members were successfully juried in as new exhibiting members to CAG: Lauren Buchanan, Eugene Cummings, Billie Larson, Linda Meadows, and Jasmine Nahorniak who was also juried into the 5th Around Oregon Annual exhibition at the Arts Center in Corvallis this past month. Congratulations to all of you.
The next jury session will occur just prior to the April 7, 2008 general meeting and will be held in the basement of the Corvallis Library. Newly appointed Jury Chairperson, Janet Ekholm will preside.
Opt Out and Survey
As a result of the member survey you participated in this fall, the Board of Directors are working to make the changes requested as a result.
An insert has been added in this month’s Brush Strokes to give members the option to opt out of receiving this newsletter via the mail and in printed format and instead receive the news by going to our website: CorvallisArtGuild.org.
Also, our Exhibit Chair, Norma Eaton is asking exhibiting members to participate in a site survey which will aid in determining the success of our current sites or the need for future exhibit sites. Thank you for your help.

Board News
The Board of Directors is in search of members who will fill the position of 2008 Clothesline Sale Chair and assist with organizing the Cecilia Anderson Memorial Workshop next spring and the Ken Stuart Memorial. If you have the skills and the will, let Brandi or Carolyn know.
In October, the 2007-2008 Budget of $8,632 was presented for approval. Exhibit locations were discussed as the Corvallis Country Club no longer wishes to be a venue.
A patron is seeking to commission an artist to paint his family portrait. Contact co-president Carolyn for more information or see website. Also, a Holiday Social is being planned for December 3 or 4, the date and location is unconfirmed at press time.
The next Board meeting will be held at the Arts Center on November 13 at 1:00 pm. Members are welcome.
Vistas and Vineyards Annual Meeting
The Vistas and Vineyards plein aire artist’s Annual meeting will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, November 14 at Corvallis Fire Station #5 off Walnut Blvd in Corvallis. Members are encouraged to attend to provide input on 2008 plein aire painting sites, election of officers, committee assignments, by-law changes, shows and the budget. Out & About
Dine For The Arts will be at Wildfire restaurant at 1115 S.E. Third Street, Corvallis on Thursday, November 1.
Winterlight Opening Reception will be held for members only on Friday, November 2 from 5:30 - 8 pm at the Arts Center at 700 SW Madison Avenue in Corvallis and open to the public the following day. Each year, over 100 artists participate in Winterlight to sell of their work with a percentage of proceeds used to support the many programs the Arts Center provides including Arts Care, Arts In Education, Exhibitions, classes and the Art Shop. To accommodate your shopping needs, the center will extend their hours to 10 am-6 pm daily, but will be closed on Thanksgiving and will remain open from 10 am to 2 pm on Monday, December 24.
Community Veteran’s Day Program, the Corvallis Community Band performs at CHS Theater on Sunday, November 11 at 3:00 pm and again at 7:00 pm. Free.

Linda Peachey has 10 slightly used tubes of Daler-Rowney Georgian oil paints for free to anyone who wants them. Call or e-mail her.
Bob Stebbins discovered an easy way to restore a brush he thought was ruined by forgetting to clean after using it with acrylic paint. He cleaned with Revlon Nail Enamel Remover and says the brush works “as good as new.â€
Art Guild Representative to Art Centric, Janet Ekholm, says following a study done by their Marketing Committee over the past year, their Board has voted to change their name back to The Arts Center. They are in the process of developing new signage for the building and will have a celebration to kick off the return of the old name in 2008.
Congratulations to Donna Beverly, Carolee Clark, Edith Harrison, Jana Johnson and Mike Ranger who are award winners at the annual Vistas and Vineyards Annual Show at the LaSells Stewart Center, Guistina Gallery at OSU in October.
Diane Hoff-Rome exhibits her fusion process paintings at Pegasus Gallery in November and December. Title of the show is Impressions of Peru and Belknap Hot Springs. Reception will be held 6:30-9:00 pm on Thursday, November 8. For more details, e-mail Diane.

CorvallisArtGuild.org Website Tips For the Month
Webmaster Pam Van Londen offers the following assistance for you to navigate our new website. She says that if you have recently signed up to add content or to browse, do you know that you can make your own page with bio, links and a photo of your artwork?
How to:
- Login in here: http://corvallisartguild.org/ then click the Write->Page tab.
- Add your name as the title.
- Type a biography.
- Click Save and Continue Editing.
- Scroll down to the Upload tab and choose a photo that is less than 500px wide and under 50k.
- Choose “full size” image with “none” (instead of extra page or link).
- Click Save and Continue Editing.
- On the right, open the blue tab labeled Category. Choose Online Art Tour.
- Click Save.
Within a few days, one of the web site editors will approve/publish your page.
Pam says that if the above instructions are too complicated, send her the bio typed in an email and attach a digital photo so she can add it for you. However, DO NOT send a Word .doc file.
So far, twenty seven members have created an account on the CorvallisArtGuild.org web site, but only one has created a biography with image(s) on the Online Art Tour section.
To include yourself, try this:
- Log into the site and click the Write tab.
- Type a title, type a biography, add a link to your web site if you have one, then Save.
- To add artwork, scroll down to the Upload area and browse for a digital image of your work (see guidelines on the site’s main menu), cite it in the description and title fields and click Send to Editor. Save again.
One of the site editors will publish it after they have confirmed your membership.

25 Secrets of Mona Lisa Revealed (full article)

New images uncover 25 secrets about the Mona Lisa, including proof that Leonardo da Vinci gave her eyebrows, solving a long-held mystery.
The images are part of an exhibition, “Mona Lisa Secrets Revealed,” which features new research by French engineer Pascal Cotte and debuts in the United States at the Metreon Center in San Francisco, where it will remain through the end of this year.
The Mona Lisa showcase is part of a larger exhibition called “Da Vinci: An Exhibition of Genius.”
Cotte, founder of Lumiere Technology, scanned the painting with a 240-megapixel Multi-spectral Imaging Camera he invented, which uses 13 wavelengths from ultraviolet light to infrared. The resulting images peel away centuries of varnish and other alterations, shedding light on how the artist brought the painted figure to life and how she appeared to da Vinci and his contemporaries.
“The face of Mona Lisa appears slightly wider and the smile is different and the eyes are different,” Cotte said. “The smile is more accentuated I would say.”

October 1, 2007
At 7 PM the social half hour commenced. Refreshments were provided during the social half hour thanks to three volunteers.
The turnout was approximately 40 members plus three visitors.
Co-president Carolyn Madsen called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM.
New member chair position: This position is now open for nominations.
Jury organization position: Brandi Dayton, the current jury organizer, is seeking someone to take over the duties of this position.
Jury: Brandi Dayton reminded members of the jury to occur tomorrow (October 2, 2007) in the library basement.
Dues: A reminder was made that dues are now due. Some members reported that the “paid to†date on their newsletter was not up-to-date. Treasurer DiAnn Acevedo is currently out of town.
Budget: The budget for the year will be finalized at the next board meeting.
Thanks: President Carolyn Madsen and Brandi Dayton presented an “Above and Beyond†award to Molly Perry for her great work with the Clothesline Art Sale. Brandi Dayton was also thanked for her involvement in both the Da Vinci and Fall Festival booths.
Exhibit chair: No news.
Programs chair: Anna Tewes is working on upcoming programs. The next program will cover using computers in arts.
Newsletter issues/volunteer: Barbary Story (newsletter editor) requested a volunteer to help with folding/stamping/labeling newsletters. Various members suggested alternatives such as: a coffee club (a group effort); using e-mail to send either the newsletter or a link to the newsletter (reducing the budget); and paying for printers to do the prep. Newsletters would still be mailed to those without e-mail. Barbara Story will look into the suggestions. Barbara True volunteered to help.
PROGRAM : Planning Our Year
Clothesline Sale Summary - Molly Perry, chair
• Sales were down this year from previous years
• Compared last year’s sales with this year’s
o Of vendors at both events, sales increased for half (20) and decreased for half, showing no trend
o More first-time vendors were present this year than ever before; the first year is usually tricky
• Many suggestions received from vendors she surveyed, to possibly increase sales
o Change dates?
o Change booth configuration?
o Change venue to Central Park?
o Add live music?
• She suggested sending personal invitations to previous buyers
• One member suggested collecting more info from vendors showing the types of items sold (glicees, originals, sizes, cards, etc)
Focus Groups
The audience split into a number of focus groups. After meeting for 20 minutes, each group presented a summary of their discussions.
Professional Artists (8 members)
• Need an overall strategy to serve the needs of the entire membership
• Some artists are professional, some more casual – all have art to sell
• Could target more venues
• Collect data on sales (where, sizes, price, etc)
• Goal: focus on making Corvallis an Art Destination
• Identify your audience and connect with them
• Gift sale before holidays (small and affordable)
• Need to form a group
Field Trips (10 members)
• Enthusiastic members
• Suggest 2 trips per year (spring and fall), starting next spring
• Start small
• Perhaps an open studios tour (by bus) within the guild
• Get acquainted with artists from Eugene, the coast, etc.
• Find out more about ARTrageous Adventures tours and organization
Clothesline Sale (5 members)
• Suggested not changing the date or location
• Move booths around (e.g. cashier in center to be more convenient)
• More advertising (Saturday market, posters, Entertainer, logos on shopping bags)
• Suggested a workshop (months earlier) on how to display effectively at a sale
• Number booths so customers can find them again
Civic Outreach (6 members)
• Need to get closer to Albany
• Need liaisons to Albany, OSU, and LBCC
• Should prepare a 5-10 minute presentation that can be presented at each location (to a class)
Education Outreach (2 members)
• Corvallis is half science and half art
• Teach learning science through art
• Proposed a children’s science museum in Corvallis

• Social to get to know each other on an even level

• Invite just the Corvallis Art Guild (not other guilds) so we can get to know each other better
Each focus group was encouraged to keep in touch with each other. Brandi Dayton suggested the use of Yahoo Groups.
Meeting with the mayor: Co-president Carolyn Madsen has been invited to attend a meeting with the mayor regarding promoting Corvallis as a Cultural Center (to be held Oct 30 2007).
The meeting was adjourned at 9 pm.
