The weather for the 47th Annual Clothesline Sale of Art was perfect–partially overcast, partially sunny, not too warm. Everyone had a good time, even though the crowds did not seem as heavy as they have been at recent past sales. Perhaps the economy and price of gas took its toll, since sales were down about 25 percent from last year.
Doyle Leek and Norma Eaton are interested in comments and suggestions from all who participated and will be having a meeting soon to discuss the Sale and plans for the next one. They want to thank everyone who helped in a thousand different ways, especially those who were not hanging.
Gross Sales Clothesline Sale 2001-2008
2001 $26,500.00
2002 $31,500.00
2003 $37,800.00
2004 $32,200.00
2005 $46,000.00
2006 $47,100.00
2007 $38.200.00

by Chairperson Molly Perry
The 2007 Ken Stuart Memorial Clothesline Sale of Art was great, although a little down in sales from last year. Most seem to think the economy is the culprit, but we will discuss that at the October meeting.
We had a perfect day weather-wise. Sixty-seven artists signed up to participate this year, and the total sales were $38,233.30. Fourteen members had sales over $1000, and only eight exhibitors sold less than $100, with average sales of $629.
Congratulations to all who exhibited and all who helped to pull it off again this year.
Most display areas looked very professional and inviting, and the effort to make them look good pays off. If your sales are not what you would like them to be, you might consider improving your display methods. We have the largest 2-dimensional sale of art (not arts and crafts) in the Pacific Northwest, so we want to look as professional as possible, because our reputation extends many hundreds of miles from Corvallis.
A few members still are not using the Corvallis Art Guild logo cards to label their artwork, and a few had only price tags with no names on them. I have a blank template for printing the CAG logo cards on business cards (Avery and other brands sell the blank cards), so if anyone would like me to send that to them, please contact me.
Some artists were giving paintings and cards to the patrons along with the sales check instead of waiting for the patron to return with the stamped receipt. I think we agreed that we could do that with cards if we wanted to take the risk, but the Guild loses money as well as the artist if a customer does not pay for the item, so please always keep paintings and prints until the customer returns in future sales.
There was some misinterpretation of the rule on sale prices, but overall the members were good about abiding by our established rules for participation in the Clothesline Sale.
I want to thank all of the volunteers who put this together, because without them, I could not have pulled it off in Ken’s absence. A huge thank-you goes to Dave Horning, who had the forethought to lengthen our harnesses so that they would fit the growing trees on the courthouse lawn, and who marshaled all of our display equipment to and from the site and deployed it with the help of various members (and their trucks). Another big thanks goes to Ross Parkerson who organized the cashiers, and to Carolyn Madsen, who stepped in for Phyllis Johnson and attended to the money and the Visa/Mastercard terminal. Also, thanks to Marjorie Kinch for getting the paid ads together for the newspaper, Hope Meados for making sure we were listed in all the calendars on the internet and in newspapers, and Doyle Leek for getting the banner and the big signs deployed in strategic locations. Thanks to Norma Eaton and Anna Tewes for their joint efforts getting the posters and post cards for this year, and a huge thanks to Maureen Frank for organizing an advertising display at the Book Bin for our sale. Clearly, this is not a list of everyone who participated…to list them all would be almost to list the membership, but I know who you are and I am very grateful for all of your hard work. Thanks for a job well done!
Ed Note: And thank you Molly Perry for your hours of dedicated service for us.

The 46th annual Clothesline Sale will be held on Saturday, August 4 on the Benton County Courthouse lawn from 9 am to 5 pm in honor of former colleague, Ken Stuart. All exhibiting members who have paid their annual dues and who have shown their work at a Guild-sponsored site between August 2006 and July 2007 are eligible to sell at this year’s event.
A reservation form was included in the June 2007 newsletter or you may request an e-mail copy from the Brush Strokes editor. Site preferences will be accommodated in the order that the forms are received. Bring your completed form to the July meeting or mail it to Molly Perry, 1405 Sherman Street, Albany, OR 97322.
Members can also volunteer to help with set up or take down or to cashier. We are hoping to get non-participants to be cashiers for two-hour shifts during the sale. Call Mary at 541-967-7279 or e-mail her at maryaucontary@comcast.net to sign up as a volunteer.

We are getting ready to take our Clothesline Art Sale poster/postcard to the printer, and we need some digital images of member artwork to hang on the “clothesline” pictured in the poster. If you are interested in having a piece considered, please send a small digital image of it (pick your best piece), preferably a JPEG (*.jpg) under 1 meg in size with at least a resolution of 72 pixels per inch. to Norma Eaton. This is free advertising, so it is worth doing.
On another note, we are going to be placing an ad in the Gazette Times to run for a few weeks before the Clothesline Art Sale. This will cost some money, so we have to ask you to send a check for $30 along with a CD Rom containing a digital image of your favorite painting (this time at least 250 pixels per inch) to Margie Kinch.
Be sure that the CD is labeled with the following:
Name
Address
Phone Number
Email Address (if applicable)
Title of 2D Artwork
Medium
If you want it back, send a self-addressed envelope stamped with sufficient postage to get it back to you.

It is that time of year when those who are planning to participate in the Clothesline Sale need to start getting your artwork in order, according to Clothesline Chair Molly Perry.
If you have matting, framing, card printing, etc. to do, it might be a good idea to get all of the necessary things ready. Time seems to catch up quickly with all of us.
Molly will be presenting our program for the July meeting and will be able to answer any of your questions at that time. The applications for display space for the sale will be inserted into the July issue of Brush Strokes for your convenience.
And, please remember, that only juried exhibiting members are allowed acceptance into the show with only two-dimensional work to be displayed. Guidelines for the sale are available in the 2006-2007 Art Guild Directory.
It is important for new or returning Guild exhibiting members who wish to participate in the sale to note that you are required to display at least once in one of our Guild sponsored sites in order to be eligible to display at the Clothesline Sale in August. Because of the large number of participants and the limited amount of space available, there will be no exceptions to this rule.

This Clothesline Art Sale of members’ work has been an annual event since 1961. It is held the first Saturday in August from 9:00am to 5:00pm on the tree-shaded Benton County Courthouse lawn. About 50 artists display their work for sale, while enjoying interaction with their fellow artists and good community support. You must be a juried member for three months prior to the sale to participate.
Each year the Board of Directors will appoint a chairperson for the Clothesline Sale. The Chairperson is encouraged to also select an Assistant Chairperson who may serve as Chairperson the following year. Various committees will be formed and will be under the direction of the annual Chairperson.
The Clothesline Sale is only open to Exhibiting Members who have been such for at least three months and have exhibited in the previous twelve months (July to July) at one of the Guild sponsored sites.
1. It is the goal of the Guild to preserve the unique tradition of the Clothesline Sale by restricting exhibited work offered for sale to original, two-dimensional artwork that is wall hung. Artists may also sell 2-D photomechanical reproductions, including cards. Any other form of art reproductions, i.e. wearing apparel, accessories, magnets, utilitarian items and the like, shall not be exhibited without the approval of the Clothesline Sale Chairperson and the Board of Directors, no later than their June meeting.
2. Sign-up for the Clothesline Sale will be done on a first come, first served basis during June of each year. An application for participation will be included with the June newsletter. Only Exhibiting Members in good standing are permitted to apply.
3. Any disputes that arise will be resolved by the Clothesline Chairperson, or the Board of Directors, as needed.
4. A commission of 10% of all sales at the Clothesline Sale will go to the Guild.
5. The Corvallis Art Guild is not responsible for loss, or damage to any artwork at the sale. Members should check their own insurance to determine whether their artwork is covered.
