Norma Eaton works primarily in collage, painting her own papers for an inexhaustible variety of colors and textures. She has invented her own vocabulary for the paper textures she has developed.
The paper texture most often seen in her art she calls “smoosh” paper because various colors are “smooshed” together between 2 pieces of paper. These are often seen in the sky and in water.
Her subjects for painting are the beautiful northwest wild places. Every summer she and her husband hike the many natural areas of her home state, Oregon, gaining inspiration for her art. She is a member of the Corvallis Art Guild and a local plein-aire group, “Vistas & Vineyards”.
Her art can be viewed at the Westgate gallery in Philomath, the Corvallis Art Guild online art tour and at various businesses throughout Corvallis.

International Artist Day is Oct 25, 2008
October 25th every year has been selected as International Artist Day.
This worldwide tribute to artists will honor and bring recognition to the contributions they have made to civilization.
Everyone around the world can do something special on that day to enhance the visual arts: take an artist to lunch, host an exhibition, buy a piece of art, attend a gallery show, visit a studio of your favorite artist.
For suggestions on how to celebrate and get your community involved, see the International Artist Day website.

“Why Design Matters “ by Donna Beverly
Donna will have a discussion about why design matters in all artwork. There are three concrete stages to most artists’ work: 1. Learn to copy what you see and master the medium. 2. Understand and apply the ideas of good design like an architect begins a structure. 3. Creatively express your personal ideas through your art.
The terms design and color theory keep most artists from developing the next stage of mastery. Donna Beverly will demonstrate that both design and color theory are essential tools to success and growth of the artist. Most people can accomplish the first stage with practice and persistence. Understanding what makes a good design is where most artists stop, and only rarely does the artist master the first two stages and pursue self-expression.
“Artists without the understanding of design and color theory are like airline pilots without any training and understanding of the basic principles of flight. The untrained pilot crashes; the untrained artist keeps copying the world around her or him and only their family displays their artwork.”
Marian from Creative Crafts will be attending our October 6 meeting and will listen to member input as to art supplies and services she might add to her store here in Corvallis.

As artists we are very lucky to be living in the mid-Willamette Valley area. In addition to our 225-member Art Guild, we have a 120-member plein air group Vistas & Vineyards, an extensive set of educational opportunities at OSU and LBCC, numerous annual shows and events such as daVinci Days, the Fall Festival, the Clothesline Sale, as well as Corvallis, which has already been designated “The Pacific Northwest’s most beautiful town”. So I propose that we declare this region the “Art Capital of the Pacific Northwest”, as stated above in the new tag line under the Brush Strokes banner.
Our plan is to use this newly-declared title as part of a strategic plan for the Guild aimed at developing a larger local art market and greater opportunities for our membership. We know that any good plan needs to be measurable and have a specific and achievable goal, and thus since many of us were disappointed at this year’s Clothesline Sale sales numbers, we will use this as the measure. Our goal can be a 25% increase per year. The recent Clothesline Sale de-briefing meeting already identified some opportunities for achieving this goal, and I expect we will develop a number of others in the next few months.
I recently started using this tag line on my personal blog and received the following comment from an artist in Vancouver… “so that is where the art capital is hiding.”
I ask that we all bring it out of hiding.
