Adventures In Art and Marketing

At the May meeting, Carrie Tasman will be sharing slides of her pastels and painting and discuss her experiences traveling and selling her art in the Northwest. Carrie says, “I haven’t had a lot of experience as a public speaker, but I do know how to paint! So please join me for a visual talk about my adventures in art and marketing!” Carrie’s talk and slide show will focus on listening and honoring your unique artistic voice as a crucial marketing strategy. Carrie will show you how imagination, playfulness, and following the poetry of inspiration has lead to a rich and satisfying expression as an artist.

Carrie has a B.F.A. in Fine Art and worked in graphic design for fifteen years before pursuing a career in painting. She is the recipient of several Best in Show awards and is represented by galleries in Cannon Beach and Sun Valley, Idaho.

The Digital White Paper

Following the Digital Art Forum that was held on February 2 this year, a group was formed to begin the task of defining differences between using the computer to digitally change photos or other scanned work as opposed to digitally composed artwork as another medium used to create original art.

After several months of preparation and feedback, the Board of Directors is in agreement with the task force who wrote the white paper and recommends it to the membership. Members will be asked at the June meeting to vote, by a show of hands, confidence in using the White Paper as the guideline for acceptance of original digital art for jurying into the Art Guild as an exhibiting member.

April Jury Session

At the April jury session, the following members became exhibiting members: Watercolorists Ann Rosé and Mike Bergen, digital artist Harold Wood, and Hap Reubens in printmaking. Congratulations to all of you!

Reviewed by a jury panel led by co-president Brandi Dayton instead of a paid juror, five members completed the jury process using the jury score sheet of basic design elements as a guide.

At the April board meeting, Brandi suggested that a panel, as opposed to a paid juror, be used in the future to complete the jury process. She also suggested using the jury score sheet only for those being rejected to speed up the process. All applicants would be given the template to see the judging criteria and be given a private interview at the end of the jury session to discuss what the panel liked and what could be improved.

In the future, jury applicants will be able to download the jury application from the website. It would also be available at general meetings or mailed, upon request.

All future jury sessions will be held at the same time as a general CAG meeting and applicants will be asked to submit their application forms no later than one week before the jury session date.

June Potluck Buffet and Election

The Potluck Buffet will begin at 6:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 2945 NW Circle Blvd in Corvallis on Monday, June 2. Watch for the June newsletter that will list the food category assignments by last name alphabetical groupings.

While a nominating committee is at work this month, we will be voting and electing new officers to fill the vacating Board of Director positions for our fiscal 2008-2009 year that begins in September.

Speaking of… Leadership!

It’s that time of year when we prepare to hand the torch onto the next team. While there is supposedly no such thing as a free lunch, it sometimes feels like it when you try to recruit people to take positions of leadership in the Guild. Have you been going along enjoying having other people run the show? How about taking the initiative and volunteering! We will need a new slate of officers for the Board and there are several other projects that could use some organization or teamwork: field trips, workshops, Clothesline Art Sale, etc.

We’d love to hear from you so that the Guild continues to be a healthy, vibrant organization. Besides, it is really great working with fellow artists and getting better acquainted. Please do consider volunteering.

2008 Clothesline Art Sale

The preparation for the Clothesline Sale begins months before the August event. Co-chairs Norma Eaton and Doyle Leek have been working toward making the event successful.

In order to get the advertising prepared and posters printed, Norma and Doyle will be selecting artwork to be used in the poster and newspaper advertising at the potluck in June. Those who want to be considered for inclusion are asked to bring a color and/or black and white print of one piece of artwork on an 8 x 11 paper to the potluck for a vote from the membership. The artwork selected will be used in the ads or on the 2008 Clothesline Sale poster.

As a reminder, all who wish to participate in the August sale must have exhibited at one or more of our monthly display sites in this fiscal year. If you wish to participate and have yet to display your work, be sure to check the open spaces available in the “Hanging Around Town” schedule and get signed up before it is too late.

Those who wish to assist in making this event successful, please contact Norma and/or Doyle and let them know that you are available to help. There are many tasks, and many skills are needed. Working together, we all benefit. Thanks to all of you who have already signed on.

Board Meeting Highlights

At the April meeting, two new items of cost were discussed and will be investigated— requirement of all non-profits to register and report regardless of income level and a new requirement for event insurance.

There is a need for volunteers to replace outgoing board members and for a chairperson to organize the daVinci Days booth.

The Nypro exhibit site is being dropped with the new Montessori school site to be added beginning in September.

With at least 167 members with e-mail addresses, under consideration is to have the July membership renewal forms contain a checkbox to drop the hard copy newsletter with a suggested membership fee changed to $20 with a $5 discount if the online newsletter is used. Currently approximately 25 members have opted out of receiving the mailed newsletter. Since the current editor is moving to Sweet Home by summer, the board approved having Henderson’s print, fold, seal, label, stamp and mail the newsletter.

Also under consideration is a board retreat in the summer to help transition the newly elected board members. For more information, the board meeting minutes are posted on our website.

Sixth Around Oregon Deadline to submit is June 1 with accepted artists to deliver their pieces on September 29 to The Arts Center with the exhibit from Oct 2-30. News and Notes

Hope Meados has received an invitation to display her artwork at the Majestic Theater in Corvallis from April to May 28. Hope also sold two paintings during the March exhibition of her artwork at Good Samaritan Hospital. Hope says, “It’s encouraging to artists to know the public is still buying art, especially in these economic times.”

Lois Bottomley reports that she sold two paintings at the Corrine Woodman Gallery while her work was on exhibit.

Kristi Mitchell, who is the newsletter editor for the Colored Pencil Association District Chapter, won first place for the Edna Henry Floral Award at the 17th annual Colored Pencil Association District Show organized by the District Chapter of Oregon and southern Washington that was held during April in Oregon City. Pat’s piece is entitled “Flavor of Rhubarb” and can be viewed at or at Congratulations to you, Kristi!

Paula LaMont will be participating in the Oregon State University Festival of Art to be held on Saturday, May 3. She will be selling original art, prints, cards and special “Best Mom” aprons.

Lorraine Price, Ruth Leeper and Nancy Clark will be having their annual May show at Sybaris Restaurant on First Street in Albany. Newton

Carol Chapel had a drawing purchased by the Art About Agriculture exhibition. The show was at the LaSells Stewart Center until April 27, followed by a traveling exhibition throughout the state. Congratulations, Carol.

To register to use the CAG website, type a username which is one word made up of your first and last name. Check your incoming email for a record of the password provided. Can’t find it? Look in your junk mail folder.

To write a post, login first then go to Write–>Post to type in a biography. Title it with your first and last name and choose the category called Online Art Tour. Save it and one of the administrators will publish it.
